Breton Electrochemical Division


Hypercat is a novel family of electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) for application in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) or Alkaline Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (AEM-FC) based on multimetal carbon-nitride matrix supported on carbon nanoparticles, patented by Breton”

Polarization curves of MEAs mounting at cathode the electrocatalysts PtNi600 and PdCoNi900. Below the conditions are reported.

Test conditions: temperature of the anode/cell/cathode: 84/85/84 °C

Fuel: H2 flow rate: 800 mL min-1  - Oxidant: O2 flow rate: 500 mL min-1
relative humidity of the reactants: 100% and back pressure of the reactants: 4 bar

The “core-shell” structure consists of core of graphitic nanoparticles and shell of carbo-nitrides supporting the metal active sites based on Platinum-Nichel (labeled PtNi600) or Palladium-Cobalt-Nichel (PdCoNi900). To be noted the last one does not contain Pt.

Experiments carried out to study the performance of PtNi600 or PdCoNi900 at the cathode of single Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEAs), show that: PtNi600 requires a Pt mass reduced to one third to obtain the same performance (up to ca. 0.3 g (Pt) kW–1 for PtNi600 vs. 1.12 g(Pt) kW–1 for the reference MEA with EC-20); PdCoNi requires (up to 0.46 g(PGM) kW–1) vs. the above reference.

These very performing results indicate that PtNi600 and PdCoNi900 electrocatalysts are suitable for the application.
